Stereotype Threat

8.15.15

Stereotype threat is when a person feels they are in a situational predicament that they are at risk of acting on a certain stereotype about their social group. It is a feeling of being part of that negative stereotype, even if you try to do the opposite. Many people face this in everyday life at home or even at work. These stereotypes can be tied to you by anything whether it be the people you hangout with or even your race.

This threat can hurt you in many ways whether it damages your confidence before a test or stops you from going to an event because you feel you do not belong. The best way to attack this threat is by first realizing where the issue began. The reason you are feeling this is because of a stereotype someone else created. If you cant figure out the location of the problem, you will never be able to full fix your issues. Thinking positive and giving reasons of why youre here and what your purpose is will best help figure out if youre truly part of that stereotype. Target someone of your race gender or group and focus on their positive accomplisments. Pondering on the negative will only set you back, beleive in yourself. Once you have proven to yourself you can do it and overcome these issues, than you will.
